Nope. Never tried. But I'm sure it would be okay. Just make sure you do at least a weekly 50% water change.
its possible though i would add a power head or at least a air powered sponge filter for water movement. depending on where in ca you are with out a heater you wouldnt be able to do it year round.
and as always the bigger the bin the better if you not going to be adding anything for water movement.

If the water itself reaches 100F, that would become an issue especially without any surface movement since warmer water holds less dissolved O2...try to keep it in the shade if at all possible.
