I recently bought an endler guppy, the person at the shop said it would breed with the normal females but wouldn't get very big, it seems though that he struggles to breed because of his small tail and body, the females just ignore him and he also seems to have to fight more to swim properly

it is kinda like this but the female is too fast for him, he is just always :eek:wned:

Because of the size difference, it makes things harder but eventually he will get it. Generally guppy x endler hybrids are frowned upon but some people like the way they look. If you sell or give away any of the babies, make sure the buyer knows that they are hybrids and not true guppies or endlers.

does that mean endlers are not true guppys?

Endlers and Guppies are different species that are able to crossbreed. Endlers are Poecilia wingei while guppies are Poecilia reticulata. Any babies from the two are hybrids.

So Cal
guppy x endler fry should be fine, more like the platy x swordtail but probably even stronger as an F1 hybrid because the "species" are so closely related.

different "species" used to mean that crosses were 100% infertile; F1s were mules and you couldn't get F2s. all the poecillas seem capable of cross-breeding out to the thousandth generation, which at least used to mean they were all the same species.

i've always thought the "pure endler" thing was extremely amusing. endlers look EXACTLY like guppies did when i was a kid (before the dinosaurs wiped out the natural populations), but they have been selectively bred into many extreme and (mostly) very pretty forms and colors. after much less than 20 years of effort, there are already "pure endler" races with many different pretty colors and forms.
