Okay, its been a while since i've posted on here, and since then, i setup the 5 gallon. It has an Aquaclear 20 filter up and running, a basic flourescent hood, a small Tetra whisper heater, an aerator with an airstone, black gravel substrate, 4 plastic plants, one piece of live driftwood, and a black background. The tank is cycled, and here are the stats:
Ammonia - 0 ppm
Nitrite - 0 ppm
Nitrate - 0 ppm
pH - 7.5
Gh - 16
Kh - 6
Temp - 78*F to 80*F
So, now for the fish. I would like to get some ember tetras and a zebra nerite snail, but i read embers will survive in my water but will lose their coloring. is this true or no?

If your tank is cycled it should show some nitrates..i would think...your kind of limited with a 5 gallon tank......maybe some shrimp or a betta...

That tank isn't cycled. There should be nitrate, and since there's no ammonia source or live plants, your tank hasn't even started cycling. (that or the cycle started over) Ember tetras won't work, they need a ten gallon minimum. what about a few chili rasboras or some other nano schooler, and a betta as the centerpiece? The snail could go in too.

I just left it go for a while. Maybe ur right about it not being cycled. So would embers loose their coloring in that water or no?

tank isn't cycled, add some sort of ammonia source, or transfer filter media to your tank. Then wait another few days and test. When tank has finished cycling that way, get some shrimp and a betta. Most tetras will get to large for a 5 gallon tank.

I think they would lose more than their color in an uncycled tank!!

I didn't mean would they survive in an uncycled tank, sorry about that. I meant would they survive and be colorful with my waters current hardness levels. Also, embers only get to be 0.8 inches anyway, so they have a very small bioload and are good for a nano tank.

I think ember tetras prefer live plants; at least, I've never seen/heard of anyone keeping them in a tank without live plants. I dont know about them losing their color in your water, but if you do go ember tetras, I say get 1-2wpg lighting, and do some java fern (you can mix it up with different leaf types), java moss, and anubias nana going for a more natural look.

anyways, I think because of their small size, 6 or so embers would be fine in a 5g.
