Hi

On the Mardel instructions it says first, that one treatment is good for a month.

Then it goes on to say that after the first treatment you have to replace however much of the medicine is removed with water changes when replacing the water.

That doesn't seem like a single treatment to me.

Do I have to leave it at initial strength for a month??

How long does it take to kill the parasites (the whole month??)?
(believed to be velvet and or gill flukes.)

The snails and shrimp I couldn't get out seem ok, but the plants are 'melting'.
If I don't have to keep it where it is for a whole month that would be great.

Thanks.

It's one long treatment.
Yes, you do need to follow the directions. If you don't you might as well not bother treating. Some parasites take a long time to kill off the entire life cycle. If you only kill off the adults, the eggs or cysts will hatch and the whole process starts over.

If you siphon out 10 gallons of water, you need to put back enough medication to fully treat 10 gallons of water.

Ok.

Some of the fish are acting 'sicker' since I added it though.
Would it be safe to use less?
How much less?
And how much longer would I have to leave it in there for (if possible)?

Is that even possible with this med?

Thanks.

Backing up a bit, flukes should have been diagnosed under a microscope.
Velvet can strike so fast you don't know you had it until after it's killed the fish.

So, the pestilence is bad, and the medicine for it is strong.
Using less than the full dose might work, but it might just kill off the weaker parasites and not kill some strong ones. That could mean a worse outbreak in the future. A possibly untreatable outbreak.

For advice, mine is follow the directions and stay the course.
Good luck.

Ok. Thanks.
They just seem so depressed since I added it, it makes me worrry. (and I hope I don't lose any more... :( )

Oh and shortly after adding it 2 of the fish - gourami and cory, rescues - started showing red at the base of their fins. That also makes me worry (I've read that is not good)...
