I def wouldn't do the pictus, they seem to robust for rams and would make a snack of yours barbs as they get bigger. I personally love syno petricola, only thing to consider is that they are schooling fish and do better in groups of 5 or 6 over 3 I would say, though synos like harder water then rams, who prefer soft water.

Cories would work well, along with loaches like kuhli maybe? I am a little biased, but I absolutely love these guys! :D

I totally agree on that! I love my synos looks, hence why I decided to order fish from online for the first time. They are only 3/4"-1" long, but already have gorgeous coloring and are so awesome looking, even my Daddy who doens't care about fish (except for pictus, oscars, and other "monster fish") likes how they look.

I did a lot of searching on kitty fish, and here are some that I thought *MIGHT* work, def research more prob, using aqadvisor is a good start imo :)

~Porthole Catfish (Dianema longibarbis) (not as striking as the synos, but still cute imo) get to be 4" long, peaceful

~Dwarf bumblee bee brazilian 2.8"-4.3" http://www.azgardens.com/p-1201-catfish-dwarf-bumble-bee-brazilian-catfish.aspx
~Golden red tail catfish http://www.azgardens.com/p-1153-catfish-golden-red-tail.aspx (not sure, but worth a look)
~Hoplo cat http://www.azgardens.com/p-1256-catfish-hoplo-hoplo-cat.aspx
~Saddleback loach (never heard of these guys in my life, but their cool) http://www.azgardens.com/p-1993-saddleback-loach.aspx
~Banjo catfish http://aqualandpetsplus.com/Catfish,%20Banjo.htm

I;d check out the misc catfish pages on this site as well http://aqualandpetsplus.com/Catfish, Miscellaneous.htm

oh and thanks for the suggestions!!! i think ill be doing honeycombs.
Of course, I'm always happy to look up catfish rather then do bio homework...hehe :) It was lots of fun, I think I might get the honey combs as well someday, similar coloration to synos, and they are super cute!

Def post pics after you get them!! :D
