When people say to use floating plants for gourami, how much surface area are we talking?

Trying to figure out if I could do it and still have good growth beneath. Are a couple/three of 3" diameter circles of Riccia good enough or does the gourami want a large matted area?

Pictures of "gourami-friendly" setups would be great!!

thank you

IMO, riccia is really messy. Those three circles of riccia might eventually become one giant clump or a dozen smaller ones. Other floating plants like duckweed and salvinia will eventually takeover your tank's entire surface area. Have you considered banana plants or pennywort?
