so for about a month now, my jack demsey has had a large, dropsy looking growth. His stomach looks like a balloon that's about to pop, but doesn't display classical signs of dropsy. He can swim fine, although he mostly stays at the bottom of the tank and hides in his log. he doesn't seem to be eating either. i've tried to feed him peas in the hopes that he was just constipated but he won't eat them. i've also noticed that there is a white, rock-like object protruding from his rectum (tried to use the best language with that) that's been there for a couple weeks. please help me figure something out i don't want to lose him

Very likely your he is a she, she's full of eggs and the little white thing is her breeding tube.

Here's a pic of a Green Terror with her tube extended. Look familiar?:

yeah looks similar to that. i got some pictures with a blackberry. he's lost his coloration and any other discoloration is because my tank is dyed lime green after using API fungus cure to treat other fish in the tank with fungal infections

and i'm not so sure if it is a she, that she is pregnant because i got her when she was a juvenille and has not been kept with other demseys

That's not the way it works with egg-layers. They don't get pregnant, the female develops eggs the male develops sperm and fertilization is external. A mature female will develop eggs regardless of the presence of the opposite sex.

ah very good piece of information to know. sorry i'm still new to fishkeeping but learning along the way. so you're saying that she's just full of eggs that will pass through regardless, and i'll just be left with a pile of unfertilized eggs in my tank?

If indeed she is just full of eggs then she'll more likely just reabsorb them.
