I read differing ideas about this one. I hear that its great to have about a tablespoon per 5 gallons, that it helps keep fish healthy but I also read that you shouldnt do this with tetras. If you know for sure, please respond. Thanks!

There is no need for salt with neon tetras. These are fish native to water with little or no sodium chloride. They will be no healthier in salted water. In fact, their native waters are low in dissolved solids, so they'd probably prefer less stuff in their water, not more.

I've kept a school of 15 of them in salted water for about a year and a half so a little salt really doesn't have a negative impact on them. It isn't necessary but it doesn't hurt.
And since a year and a half is a small part of their captive lifespan, I can't call that a good recommendation.

Tetras tend to come from acidic waters in general and if I am not wrong those waters tend to be low in dissolved solids. So no need to add salt.
Salt can make a great medication if your fish are sick though so it is always nice to keep a box on hand.

The great livebearer salt debate I believe. It's interesting. I can't believe people tell newbs that they "need" salt. Furthermore, I dont know where someone came up with that myth. Heres the "good read":
