Hey everyone, im new to the forums and have a few questions in regards to the so called "freshwater moray eel" i found on aquascapeonline :http://www.aquascapeonline.com/aqua...ater-fish-oddballs-eels-freshwater-moray-eel/

Im wanting to purchase a couple or these guys but how long or if at all can they live in freshwater? i cant find what ph they need or temp either... Would they be good tankmates for a 9 inch arowana? the setup i currently have is large and with plenty of rockwork, plant and hiding spots with heavy filtration. the ph is currently 7.2 with a temp of 78f. what do you guys think? im also using black water extract from oak leaves, is this a problem?

Freshwater Moray eels and Water conditions

First of all I would like to stress that these fishes are not really freshwater fishes, even if they can be found from time to time in freshwater. They are much rather kept in brackish waters. This said I should add that it is possible to keep these fishes in freshwater more permanently, however the fishes are much more sensitive in freshwater and therefore this is not recommended if you don’t have extensive experiences with these species and even then brackish water is preferred.

Freshwater Moray eel aquariums

I recommend a big aquarium, at least 540 L/120 Gallon for these fishes which grows to about 60 cm. The aquarium should be decorated with a lot of hiding places.

from the sound of that description I would recommend keeping it in brackish tank .....makes sense that a slat water critter may be alble to adapt to freshwater but over time it may be problematic

My LFS just got some freshwater morays in. According to him, they are true freshwater fish, not brackish, and are related to the marine snowflake morays, but arent as colorful. Here is his store's FB page http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002667227390 and his website is www.vangsplakat.com

He loves educating people and doesnt order stock he doesnt know about, so I'm sure he would welcome any questions you would have. If you dont live in the Milwaukee area, he does ship fish, though I dont know what the policies would be on a fish like that. Good luck!

Unless its something different I've seen these or something that looks very similar to these sold under the name "snowflake eel" for freshwater.
