Ok, so a while back I asked if I should get a laptop or desktop for my birthday. I have decided I want to build a desktop for myself after doing it for other people for 2 years. But my friend (not able to contact right now) was always the one who selected the parts. I just put the system together.

So here it goes

I chose to go with an amd apu for price to performance since I am not a HUGE gamer but I enjoy the casual game and hd video playback
amd FX-4100 apu

power supply. I realize that 550w may be a bit overkill, but I want to be able to upgrade to a nice gpu later on if I so desire.

corsair h60 just because. Not needed, but I have wanted one and could probably use it in future builds. (might go for the h80)
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details_ss.asp?EdpNo=7335485&Sku=C13-2527

and of course a dvd burner. Just picked it because it was black. But since the rest of the case inside is silver, I might go for an lg model.

I would just use my current hdds (for a total of 400gb). Paying $75 for $500 gb doesnt make sense right now if I already have hdds. I have a 120gb ide I can throw in my current computer and hand down to my little bro.

I have a nice keyboard and mouse combo I like already. And I have dual 19in monitors that I like to use.

Since I broke $400 I might as well make the budget $450 and upgrade to the h80 so I can control the pump speed and that will in turn control the fan speed as well. So when it is just being used for internet browsing and stuff it should be fairly quiet.

i say it looks like a good way to spend 450 lol
Yeah, the rough total with the h80 instead of h60 is $422 then tax. I dont NEED the water cooling, but I want to be the first at the club with it. If I went without it, I would probably be fine and it would be a $330 computer instead. I will see how much I actually get for my b day.

I would ditch the water cooling and put the money toward a faster CPU with a good fan and heatsink.

Other than that it looks reasonable. Way faster than anything I have here.

So. If you're not going to be heavy into gaming, why liquid cooling? I know a lot of people that do a lot of gaming, and only one has liquid cooling. Of course, this person is unemployed (lots of money in the bank due to a few won lawsuits) by choice, and literally plays games 14+ hours per day. Yes, 14+ hours per day. Not many people like this person enough to spend time with her face to face, so games are pretty much the only available avenue for socialization. And no, if you're wondering, I'm not one of the people willing to speak to her if I can avoid it. I'm just friendly with her roommate.

If you're unsure how much power you need, newegg.com has a calculator. Plug in the hardware, and it spits out a wattage.

Thanks for the calculator tip. LOL, what I plugged in said 269w. But I plan on possibly upgrading in the future to a dedicated gpu.

As for the liquid cooling, it is something new for me to try. Something for me to say I have and no one else in the club has. Plus in the summer I plan to up my gaming. I am doing it now, but am limited to the specs of my current computer.

Just knowing the play that the people I know put their air cooled pcs through, without issue, I find it hard to justify getting liquid cooling, both cost and effort wise. Also, if I recall correctly, not all motherboards and cpus are compatible with liquid cooling, but I'm sure there's a way around it.

Like someone else said, though, instead of doing the liquid cooling, I'd either go for a decent GPU now, or get a faster processor. IMO, actual performance is more important than being able to say I'm the only one with liquid cooling. If you go liquid cooling just for the bragging rights, it's like like having a car that you race with that you've spent a lot of money on to be able to say that you have oak paneling and doveskin leather inside, instead of spending the money on better performance.

True, but I am used to my 1.6ghz pentium dual core. a 3.6ghz 3.8 max turbo quad core is going to be much faster. I am starting to piece together a system with an amd six core and air cooling.

This wont be my only pc build, I could always use the liquid cooling again when I get to a higher end system. I know people have overclocked and been stable with the stock fan that comes with the apu. And the $ from the liquid cooling could go to a dedicated gpu.

Time to go finish piecing together a second system with a dedicated gpu and a six core.

Possibly this nzxt case instead of the haf 912.

Would still cost the same.

I like this system much more, but what power supply?

Oh, and there is no liquid cooling, just air for now. Unless someone can recommend a better air cooler that doesnt break the bank at the same price as liquid cooling.
