ok getting out of fishkeeping besides havinga 10 gallon. right now its not set up, but what would go good with a female betta for a 10? was thinking of having her alone in the 10? or maybe a few shirmps and a few guppys? what you all think? and what would you all do for a 10 gallon?

I just set up an older 10 gallon as a planted shrimp tank. Changed gravel to pool filter sand driftwood lots of plants. Etc. just waiting to make sure it doesn't re-cycle or cycle all over again before adding the shrimp. I will try to keep a male dragonscale Betta (who is currently occupying it) with them but have a back up plan for him if he gets grouchy. So excited to get the cherry shrimp but want to make sure tank is stable first.

Sorry, this isn't exactly on topic, but why are you getting out of fishkeeping?

Its sad that you lost a lot of your fish, but honestly, a quarantine tank or getting your fish from a reputable seller would have prevented that problem if it was disease. If a fish you bought there aggressively killed the other fish, then walmart is not to blame for that at all.

As for what to keep with a betta, I wouldnt go with guppies. Even females are territorial and aggressive. The two I've had have been more aggressive than the males I've kept. Guppies, with their bright colors and flowing fins, tend to set off betta aggression. Shrimp are also iffy. Some bettas will leave them alone, some will destroy them all in very short order. It all really depends on the personality of the betta.

well i thought of one stock that may work..

6 neon tetras
1 female betta
12 shrimps of some sort
MAYBE 6 harliquin rosboras?
2 snails ( dont know what kinds yet )

so how does that sound?

Shrimp can be hit or miss with betta's I've had some that ignored them, and I had one that hunted down and killed about a dozen CRS in a couple hours, and other who just occasionally picked one off. I would buy a few cheap ghost shrimp to test the betta before investing in any expensive shrimp. Same goes with Snails some betta's ignore others pick on them so much they died or stayed in their shell until being removed from the tank.

Betta and Guppy in a 10g usually wont work, I've been successful in 29 and 40g with 1 betta and 2 or 3 fancy guppies. Neons or Rasorba's shouldn't be a problem.

I would recommend either/or on the neons and rasboras, not both. Harlequins are bigger and need more swimming space than neons and in a 10 gal with other fish in there, I just dont think a school of them would be happy or healthy. Also, just a personal opinion, for smaller tanks I tend to think it looks much nicer having only one larger school of fish rather than trying to cram multiple schools in. You will already have a decent amount of diversity with having the shrimp and betta in there. Add a couple of pretty snails: red ramshorns or maybe some of the brighter nerites, and you will have an active, colorful tank without it looking too busy.

Just a word of warning. From what I hear, Bettas are normally fine with Tetras and Rasboras, but mine isn't. So just feel out how your Betta reacts, but know that you may have to remove him if he is anything like mine (at least until he gets used to his tank/tank mates).
