I've been thinking about rebuilding my 55 it currently had a gravel bottom with 2 fire mouths, a convict, a Dempsey, 2 peacock cichlids, a L-200 and a hi-fin syno I've heard that java ferns and anubis plants would be the best. Is that correct? Also I'm changing it to a sand bottom as soon as I have some extra money

They're generally less palatable to fish than other plants. I know of several people that keep anubius with various African cichlids. Java Fern, I don't know. What pH are you going to be keeping the tank at?

That stocking could use some work, those fish aren't suited for living together.

I think that the plants might fare better if they're attached to decorations/driftwood, but they should be fine with peacocks. A JD may mess with them when he's larger, mine has left plants alone so far (4-5") but yours could be different.
