I looked at the ones for aquariums, pretty fancy, but 40 dollars for a digital thermometer is a little much IMHO... so I bought an indoor/outdoor digital thermometer from walmart for eight bucks, plunked the sensor in my filter, and tada... works fine.

I've bought a variety. The best I've found are the $9 Radio Shack variety. They have a totally sealed temp probe that doesn't allow any water to infiltrate the probe. All the diigital thermometers I found at WalMart had a probe end that looked like it wasn't waterproof. (I have several of the latter type, though, and they all seem to be working OK after several years...)
Don't forget to change the battery every year! If you don't the display doesn't go out, it just gets stuck on whatever the last powered reading was.
