Im trying to learn how to play the guitar and was wondering how you guys out there learned to play them. Did you have an instructor? self taught?
How did you learn to play the guitar?

Been playing for 14 years, 12 of them playing well. Self taught. Never been properly trained. Don't even know proper names for chords and such. The key for me was just practice practice practice. Try to learn a few songs you already know well in your head. If you can sing, try to learn to sing and play together from the beginning. If you are just now starting out, expect to practice very hard for a while and then hit a brick wall and put the guitar down for a bit. Then, when you pick it back up, you'll be surprised.
Also, regardless of whether you intend to primarily play acoustic or electric in the long run, do most of your practicing (at least in the beginning) on an acoustic. You'll build up the muscles and callouses much faster. Oh yeah, get ready to not be able to feel your fingertips on your fretting hand very much anymore...or both hands if you get into finger picking...
