Canister intake question

I have this Aquatop CF500UV filter. The intake has a small 1-2" bar off to the side. I'm assuming it's to add some type of a skimmer or something? Someone care to shed some light on it?

Yes it's for an add on. Could use it to vacuum but I don't need extra crap in the canister
