Glad to have found this site!
I'm 52, female, live in Oregon, and have enjoyed freshwater aquariums since I got my first for my 10th birthday back in North Carolina.
I didn't have one for many years, but now have a 14 gallon tank with a natural gravel substrate, external filter, the hood that came with the tank(which has a 15 watt full spectrum bulb).
I have 1 very beautiful red and blue male Betta, and lots of green algae.
I would like to have a low tech planted tank.
Can anyone please give me advice on how to accomplish this. I know my lighting is considered low, so I'd like to stay with plants that will thrive in my conditions. I also have fairly high pH well water.
My sweet husband has to deal with a lot of this, as my left side is paralyzed from a stroke 5 1/2 years ago.
Do we need to thoroughly wash the gravel, or can we just vacuum it and plant?
I would really appreciate any advice you offer!
Thank you, Margaret/margojnab
