Yawning pleco - what are these thorns?

Around his gill area? Pics are next to impossible, you cant see them unless he yawns. It looks extremely sharp and serrated all over like thorns. About 4-8 thorns per gill side. Maybe a few more or less. I have grown very attached to this plecostamus and want to make sure this is nothing to be concerned about.

Spines behind the gill plate. Completely normal for the Ancistrus genus.
Well yeah but I'm talking internal, inside the gill slits. You don't see the thorns unless you take him out of the water or he yawns. Idk, I suppose this could be the gill plate I'm no pleco expert.

I first saw those things on my pleco when I got "her" a boyfriend. Turns out "she" was really a "he" and didn't appreciate the new guy! LOL! The two of them were actually able to bloody each other up a bit by wagging their bodies side to side with those spiky things out...
