So for those who remember, I moved from CA to AZ and my fishies are still in CA under my parent's care (still working on figuring out how to get them to me). I just got a 46 gallon acrylic tank off craigslist up and running, just need to add plants. Pics will come later today for comments/opinions :) no time right now cause I'm just on my lunch break. Now for my question: I got a used filter for my tank. It is a topfin 60 and it is incredibly loud. It runs just fine, just REALLY loud. Anyone know how I could make it quieter? I'm in an apartment and you can hear it from my room through the whole house and I'm sure my housemate doesn't want to hear it... I've never heard such a loud filter.

Loud as in the motor making noise? Is the motor removable or accessible? If so I would try rinsing it good previous user may of got some sand or something inside it, also inspect the impeller for any damage and make sure its seated correctly and lubricated. Might not be a whole lot you can do about it Top Fin isn't exactly high quality.

Yea, I can access the motor, to me it sounds like a really loud impeller, driving me NUTS! I'll try lubricating it. I've dealt with Penguin filters until now and they were a little loud, but great for white noise because there weren't too loud. Is there a semi-cheap brand you would recommend?

Aqueon quiet flows are pretty quiet if you remove that drip tray thing they claim makes it quieter. I removed mine and it is WAY less noisy than it was with it in. If I put it back in, there is an instant louder noise. But they are designed thin so adding your own media isnt as easy.

Aquaclear filters tend to be the quietest in my experience. And they have the best media out of the box, and really open to change. They arent super cheap, but you can get them pretty cheap on amazon.

I had a filter driving me up a wall bc it was sooooooooo loud, and couldn't figure out why. Finally I tore it apart, again, and the "house" around the impeller wasn't properly fitting onto it. Idk if you can get to the impeller on those. If you can order online, they are soooo much cheaper than in store. I buy all my filters from dr fosters smith http://www.drsfostersmith.com/fish-supplies/filters/ps/c/3578/3579

Their penguin 350 is on sale for $30 and some change

+1 for aquaclear. the intake is also nice and round so it's easy to slap a sponge on it.

if you want super cheap, call some petco stores. they just discontinued their previous models and some stores still have them on clearance. i hope you're handy with media cuz they also discontinued the cartridges :D
