This has now happened to a third 20" black FL hood (Perfecto and All-Glass). The inner white plastic reflector/mount has changed into a white crumbling mass. The entire section between the FL "sockets" crumbles into small pieces when touched or stressed. Eventually the plastic crumbles around the screws and the assembly falls apart. In each case I've had to remove the guts and replace them with a new FL assembly. None of my larger hoods or 20" woodtone hoods have had this happen.

I saw a thread from 2009 where it happened to someone else. One of my hoods was over 20 years old, but had been in storage 1995-2010. The other two had been purchased used so I don't know how old they are.

The UV light from the fluorescent lamps degrades the plastic over time. Not much you can do about it other than replace it.
