Question Can a black ghost knife live in a 40 gallon long?

If not what other knives can.

A BGK gets bigger than the short sides of a 40 breeder, so no way should it be in that tank. The only Knife I'd consider would be a Glass Knife, Eigenmannia virescens. They get over a foot long, but they're not very active and aren't the voracious feeder that BGKs are.

40 inches long and wide is what it should say. The fish needs to be able to turn around, otherwise the tank (no matter how may gallons or how long) isn't large enough.

How big does your book say a BGK gets?

Some say that a BGK can grow 2 ft plus. They grow very slowly. My 11-12 inch BGK is little over 4 yrs old. He sleeps most the day and plays at night.

the numbers I read for them were 18". I'd probably wan't something larger for them. That being said I had two of them in my community tank without a lick of trouble until about a year old at which point they were about 5-6" and started harassing the other fish. Only problem is my new place doesn't have room for the 125 to be set up so I sold them both back to a good LFS up here . I'd certainly say that a 40b could hold one for a couple years. But I'll get flamed for sure for not advising you to start out with an adult sized tank for it. Although that would be a very boring 90 gal.

An African Brown Knife will work in a 40g. It tops out in the 8-9" range.
