I would add a buffer like Prime or other detoxifier to the water. Even after adding you may get a false positive. Your tank should recover fairly quick if you can agitate the water by means of a powerhead or air driven device. The more you can agitate the water the more you will help it to off-gas faster.

Yeah I am using prime everyday in emergency dose at the min. I will add a powerhead to the tank now. Can prime give a false positive for nitrite and rate?
The fish are not as stressed now, their breathing is still fast but not like it was.
