    Hermit crab habitat

My sisters got 2 hermit crabs from the outter banks this summer and they are living in a 2.5 gal aquarium with some gravel, a water sponge and a food dish. I want to make a new habitat for them that's more appropriate. At my disposable I have old sand and rock from my reef, and maybe a 10gal laying around if it wasn't thrown away.

When I had them in the past I always found that they loved to climb stuff so driftwood and large rocks to crawl on will be greatly appreciated.

I would also mix in some Eco Earth with the sand. It holds in humidity much better. The #1 killer of hermit crabs is from them drying out.

This thread will be fun to follow, I'd love to learn more about hermit crabs. (I used to have them when I was younger)

I used to have hermit crabs and had a hard time keeping them alive at first. As said above, keep the humidity up. The other thing I remember was they like to have a dish of salt water and a dish of fresh water. Deep enough for them to get into but shallow enough to climb out of. They do love to climb!! Keep a tight lid on the tank. They also like to bury themselves so deep sand is good. I used coconut shell shavings to hold humidity. Lots of shells to chose from and fresh food. That's all I can remeber for now. Hope it helps.

    Thanks everyone

I'm assuming store bought as they are in hoaky painted shells.

Another thing to consider....how warm is the room you're keeping them in? Since they're a tropical species they will need additional heat if the room is too cold. That actually make an under tank heater designed specifically for hermit crabs.

Heat is another issue im trying to work around. The house is kept around 73 in the winter, so I'll have to get a heater for them.
