Angry fellow divers from the shore of Seattle took photographs of Dylan Meyer proudly standing with the large octopus and then watched in disbelief as he and his friend tossed the still live 30 pound female onto the bed of his truck before driving off.

Their shock turned to horror as a grinned Mayer posted images of himself measuring the now dead octopus onto his Facebook accoun.

'It's just not done. It's bad form. Even if you can do it, you shouldn't do it.'

The wannabe rescue diver has said that he has been demonised by the local scuba community and has had to deny claims that the octopus was sitting on eggs when he captured her.

'That's not true. There were no eggs under it, and we checked,' said Mayer.

'I even had a game warden come over and look at it, and even they said there was no problem with it.'

'I think the timing, manner, and place where the harvest occurred may be the issue. It could have been done at a better time,' send Wendy Willette.

Indeed, Mayer told Komo News that he has now been banned from several diver shops in the Seattle area because of the octopus hunt.

He said that his dream of becoming a rescue-diver is in jeopardy because he has been banned from several diving schools because of his actions.

If he took it home to eat it, my only problem would be with those who have a problem with his doing it. If however he took it home to become an internet star then I think the ostacism he's experiencing in the local diving community is an appropriate and well deserved punishment.

Live in WA..close to Seattle they are not suppose to use weapons and two knifes were found near the site the Octopus had its cave and eggs ( it is illegal to take a female on eggs) , they beat it and strangled it, once on shore and were boasting about taking it to the divers near them who were concerned with the kid's treatment of the animal...sure hunting is fine but you don't drag a still living deer threw town where people love the deer as its still kicking and just jab at it while people watch.

both kid's face books are full of pics with animal torture..snakes with fire crackers in their mouth's and such..they need to be punished and dealt with, laws need to be put in pace to protect such creatures in these diving reserves.

I don't think they used knives, or at least not properly, if the octopus was still squirming when removed from the water. The weapons are banned because you have to hunt them with your hands... so I wonder what is technically the proper way to kill an octopus with your hands? The one article I found that mentioned those other questionable photos on his Facebook states that the octopus was an 80 pound male, not a 30 pound female. The "nesting female" attribute seems to be one word against the other. His Facebook is basically locked down now, so it's hard to confirm those other photos.... not supporting him, just discussing these points.

I'm a diver, It's bad form to hunt in at popular dive sites, there are other places for that activity. Yes, it's legal, but that doesn't mean it's right. Around here a lot of the good dive sites are in MPA's so luckily it's not really an issue here. The kid is a jerkwad for breaking the socially accepted code.

The rescue diver part in funny though, because this in no way will jeopardize that.

That octopus wasn't 80 pounds.

If he killed it properly there is nothing wrong with it, but I think that he should have had a better place to put it than the back of a pickup truck.

Yeah, he should have brought a cooler. That would have avoided all this mess.
