Hi, my grandma has a 2.5 gallon aquarium with a single male Betta in it. Its been doing very well for about 6 months now. Apparently 3 weeks ago she noticed a silvery lump on its left shoulder area. It hasn't gone away and apparently it's gotten a little bit larger. She cleans the tank every week and I checked the parameters and everything checked out as normal. Can anyone tell me what this lump is? I'll try to post a picture later on here.

What is is shaped like? Fish can get parasites, they tend to look like a small ball under the scales. Could be an injury--which should heal if the conditions are good. How does she clean the tank?

It's shaped like a silvery ball protruding from the scales. And that's what we were wondering too. She siphons the gravel and does a 25% water change every week and cleans the filter once a month.

Looks like a parasite. I am not sure what the best course would be--a medicated anti-parasite food, perhaps? Hopefully someone with more specific advice will chime in.

Here's an update on the betta: we dosed the water appropriately and tried adding salt but that didn't seem to work because the bulge has just gotten larger. On the other hand though the betta is acting much healthier and is more active despite the growth. Any ideas?
