It's yellow and purple. It was in a tank with kenyi's...but the only kenyi's I have ever seen are blue.

Because the only Kennyi you've seen were females and/or juveniles. That's an adult male.

Well I guess my next task and or question is what kind if tank mates can it have? Is it the kind of fish that prefers 3 females to every one male or anything?

Don't sweat it, kennyi isn't the proper name anyway, they're Pseudotropheus lombardoi. Sex ratio doesn't matter too much, females are every bit as nasty as males.
