Hello there, first post. Have had a marine tank for many years but it is not an all consuming hobby! Just something we like to watch and care for. Our tank is a 30 gallon Nano and been up and running smoothly for 3 years. About 2 years ago we introduced a brittle green starfish. We realize the tank is probably a bit small but this does not seem to have caused it any problems. HOWEVER, at lunchtime today just as we decided to do a water change we noticed that one leg had come off neatly from the starfish's body. Six plus hours later the starfish is eating heartily and the leg (which has continued moving around since separation) is rolling around, all curled up and trying hard to stuff a piece of shrimp down the end of the leg which was attached to the main body! Is this a normal happening? Would love to know if there is anything we need to do. Sorry not to have read any previous threads which h may cover this, but feel I'd like to know ASAP!Many thanks.

Try posting this in the marine section for more views/responses. The starfish should be fine but keep a close eye on it. The amputated leg may develop into another starfish but hard to say for sure. Some Linckia stars can regenerate from a single ray/leg. Several new starfish can grow from a single dismembered star. This isn't true for all sea stars, however, so it may not apply to yours.

Green brittle star

Hi, thanks for your reply so here's hoping something may come of it. Will repost to marine section as you suggest.
