Let's say you didn't feel like buying filter open cell foam online or from a fish store, but you needed a good sized block of it for DIY sponge filters. Where else might you be able to find some? I have a feeling it must be made for something else and be cheaper than when sold for pet specific purposes.

Sometimes you can find it in a crafts store or places like JoAnn Fabrics. If it is flame retardant, you will need to know how it is made. There are some that are simply manufactured with iron content and others use chemical treatment.

Go with the Poret, it is definitely worth the extra price. Huge difference between reticulated open cell foam and not...a sponge filter made with Poret can actually make your water look as polished as a tank filtered by any other means, which was previously not possible with sponge filters.
