If I have the pump on the top of the canister like so: http://www.jonolavsakvarium.com/eng_diy/canister_filter/canister_normal.jpg (except my pump is internal, not external) won't it be really hard to get the water flowing? I mean, how am I supposed to prime it unless I put a valve on the tank water in pipe and then fill it to the top and put the lid back on?

If I switched positions of the pump, wouldn't it self prime?

Most canister filters have the pump on the top. That said, I'm not sure I quite understand that DIY filter design. It looks like it'd be quite the chore to clean the filter pads, which is something that still needs to be done.

How large of a tank will this filter be for?

I don't get building one yourself (especially that specific design), when you can buy a plug-n-play import canister that's proven to be effective and reliable for a fraction of the cost of a name brand.

That DIY design looks HORRIBLE to me. Why would you want the bio media (ceramic rings) in the unfiltered, dirtiest part of the filter? That media is just going to get covered and clogged with solids.
