I received my gate valve for my herbie overflow system by mail order and it has some type of lubricant inside on the gate. I emailed the provider but have not heard back from them yet. Do you think it is safe? If not, how the heck to get rid of it (it is like Vaseline)?

If it's Schedule 40 or Schedule 80, it will be clearly marked so somewhere on the valve body. It would mean it's rated for potable water, so no problem, it would have to be a food grade lubricant.

I just looked at one I have laying around and it's not marked as I mentioned, but it is marked "NSF61" which is another standard rated for potable use.

Did you order it from an aquarium supplier?
No

So I did a dry fit test run and I don't think it is supposed to do this. Just want make sure it isn't because of not being glued and something before i contact the dealer. It is coming from the valve stem area and does it whether the valve is open or closed.

I looked it up and I tried tightening the packing nut but it still leaks. So I assume this is not my fault in any way and will contact the dealer. It kinda looked used anyways. Perhaps re-stemmed, poorly? :)
