I'm thinking of getting a canister for my 40 gallon tank and am torn between the Fluval 306 and the larger 406.
Would the 406 create too much water movement for a 40 gallon? My stocking is dwarf Apistos and Cardinal tetras..

I can't remember at this very moment which fluval I recently bought, but it is on a 30 gallon and I want to say is rated for a 70 gallon. The flow in the tank is decent, but not over powering. If I remember I will check the exact model when I go up stairs.

The 306 is rated for up to 70 gallons. The 406 is rated for up to 100, but usually those numbers are optimistic. I want the largest filter that won't overwhelm my little 40 gallon tank and little fishes.

406 is excessive, go to 306. I have pratiko 200 (equal to fluval 205) on 29 gallon tank. I think is a good and quiet filter.

And no matter how much flow is being generated, application of a drill can add holes into a spray bar to reduce the force from each opening. Or you could conceivably DIY a spray bar that runs the entire length of the tank to diffuse the flow. Canisters provide you with more options than HOBs.

I would agree to go larger and then adapt a spray bar to diffuse the flow. I had a 404 and an xp3 on my 90. Much bigger tank but I never noticed any real currents that the fish could not handle.

Can't you just turn the stray bar to hit the glass instead of directly in to the water?
Or you can cut small slot in a small water bottle to hang it over the stray bar and the water will pour slightly from the sides.
