Taking a second look at the photos, I just noticed the huge amount of bio media. Are they fully submerged in water or just water just run through from the top and drains out?

Sorry~I didn't fully understand. You mean filtering system or drainage problems? I am using the top filtration system in large tank.

You can ignore my question before. I think i'm confusing myself as well.
I was just wondering how your filtering system worked. I only used them canister filters.

I use the upper filtering system. Concrete is "trickling filter". This filter relatively safe (no water leakage). And the filtering effect is good,.And it can make the nitrifying bacteria into full play.
