I just finished setting up my 10 gallon that had been out doors. I was running this with a 5gallon sump and planting cuttings from my other tanks inside. Being outside grew the plants well and the sump helped to keep water temp below 83degrees F, but i was not able to enjoy as often plus I wanted a quarantine tank. So here it is:

it has a DIY sponge filter that has already been cycled.

Very nice QT! I like to plant mine too with plants I don't mind tossing if I have to treat or have a mystery disease & décor I can bleach or pitch. I think it really helps fish to adjust with hiding spots, provides micro-goodies, helps prevent ammonia spikes & looks good even when empty. A QT is mandatory to me & should be to anyone with more than 1 tank if at all possible. It's only a matter of time before a disaster strikes or I succumb to an impulse buy & it's good to be prepared.

Thank you fishorama. This is very true, sadly I did not realize it until one of my corys became sick and I tried to QT him in a makeshift hospital tank (specimen container with an air stone) After he died I posted a thread about it. Jpappy was nice enough to coach me on setting up a PROPER hospital tank. This was s few months ago and I have had this tank cycling for about 2 months. I want to be prepared, I think it is necessary to give the best care you can give to anything you are attempting to raise. Plus, I would like to get into the habit of quarantining my plants and fish from now on before adding them into any other tank (although I am very impatient). Never had any thing bad happen before but I am avoiding it now.

i lost two of the neon tetras, most likely during the acclimation. The tap water here has high GH an KH and from what I understand neon tetras have issues with hard water. I hope the rest make it...buying 3more today

Even though neons are considered a "beginner fish" at big box stores i find them to be a very delicate fish. Just about anything can really mess neons up imo. I had 5 in a planted 10gal and i am now left with 2. Sorry for your loss though. I hope the best for your survivors :)

P.s.- sweet QT tank. I finally have spare media and enough empty 10gals laying around to finally have a QT incase of an emergency or purchase of a new fish

Thanks ktrom :)

So I went to my LFS and was planning to replace the neons that died (another one died today) and when I got there I saw signs on all of the neon tanks that said "Fish not for sale." I talked to one of the employees and he told me that the owner recently took over all fish orders. He has been ordering the same fish from the same place despite the low survival rate. He was very upset and because they have a "48 hr return dead fish policy" they only sold 14 out of 250 fish from that order. He said the neon situation will be bad for a while.

So, I went with a six set school of long-fin zebra danios and they are so much more interesting. I also broke down and bought a gold ram that i wanted for my 20g long but will be going into my 29 with the danios.
I drip acclimated the neons to be placed in my girl friend's 2.5 gallon. it has a strong current so they are happy. We will QT them in there, hopefully they make it but most likely not.

I washed the qt tank by siphoning all the water out and pouring 2gallons in while the last few inches were draining and then waiting until all the water was gone. Filled it back up.
then i prepared the new stock for QT

The ram is very clean and loving the planted qt tank session.
