Here's the specs on a LED I'm looking at:
Fixture Size: 23.50" x 7.50" x 1.25" (Add 0.65" in height with bracket installed)
LEDs Count: 120
2000 Lumens
Super energy efficient 0.2 watt high output LEDs
96x 10,000K LED
24x Actinic 460nm LED
Use 24 watts

Here's a link: http://www.aquatraders.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=56285

Do you think this is to much light for a heavily planted 20H?

No CO2 but liquid carbon is dosed daily along with liquid ferts

That looks to be geared more towards a marine tank with the 10,000K light spectrum. From my understand, and what ive found with the LEDs i have on my planted tank, you want 5500-6500K light temperature. take a look at my LED light fixture i made for my 10 gallon planted tank i started.

these are the lights i used

and the GU10 connectors you are going to need

The color temperature is more a reflection of what your eye sees. 10000K is going to be bluish. Will your plants be able to use the light for photosynthesis? Yep. Will it look kinda weird? Yep. Also, looking at the write up for that fixture, it specifically says marine fish/inverts. That *implies* it lacks the PAR you're going to need for plants, even if it wasn't pretty blue.

There's a thread on TPT with some PAR readings from a 30" Beamswork HI fixtures. What you get on your tank will differ though since the 20H is deeper and you'd be using a shorter fixture which may have less output. That may not be an issue depending on what you want to do with the tank.

However I would assume they are using a FW version. I notice they also sell a 18-22" version marketed for planted tanks. Not sure how well it does in terms of spread over a 24" tank, but that might be an option if you want to go with that brand.

Pappy, I'm glad you piped in with this info because I spent the better part of last evening trying to find PAR info on this brand. I'm definately going to check that link. -- thanks

I do like the blue look. This is to replace a T5 fixture that recently crapped out on me that had 10K and actinic lamps in it

Knock off brands don't seem to have a lot of published PAR readings unless a hobbyist is willing to go through the trouble of testing themselves. You might have to do some more digging to find specifics on your fixture model/size or just do some estimates based off the info you can find.

From the top of my 20H to the top of the substrate is ~14". From what I can extrapolate from that TPT thread (esp. the very top example of the 30" HI lamp @10" = 45 PAR), is that I should be good with medium to low light plants (~30PAR). That's what I'm growing in there right now.

I'm going to order one and give it a go. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again, that link was greatly appreciated

Oh this is awesome! I have been trying to figure out how to light my hex tank, and this may work beautifully.

so after some deliberation and feedback from here and another forum, I chose neither that I listed but this one instead: http://www.ebay.com/itm/300802306793?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Here's the specs:
Features:

  • Dimensions - 23.00” x 5.00” x 1.00”
  • Brackets add 0.65" in height
  • Includes 78 LEDs
  • 1500 Lumen
  • Super energy efficient .20 watt LEDs
  • 72x 10000K LEDs
  • 6x Actinic 460nm LEDs
  • Uses 18 watts
  • Slim and contemporary light design
  • 2 mode on / off function for day and night use
  • Extendable bracket - 24"-30" (60 cm - 75 cm) max extend
  • Non-corrosive powder coated aluminum housing
  • Splash guard
  • 110V - 220V

Some folks at the other forum suggested the ones I had chosen were probably going to be to bright for my application. I'd prefer to grow plants not an algae farm so I went with this one. So far, things look good and the plants seem to be responding well.

Sorry no pics - my camera died recently ans my phone is a piece of crap when it comes to pics. I'll see if I can do anything with my daughters I-Pod later when she gets home.

Anyways, just wanted to add an update.
