I need a good light for a tank thats 18" wide and 20" deep (23g hex).

Would the marineland double bright LEDs work? r would I need something stronger? I really don't want to drop $200+ bucks on a fixture.

What level light are you trying to achieve? Low, med, high? Are you set on LEDs?

I guess medium to high light, and I'm not set on LEDs, but T5 fixtures are out of my price range right now. My LFS wants an arm and a leg for a 4 tube unit, and its the only one that will fit my tank.

Well I have a 55 corner hexagon tank and I am currently using a 30" single bulb t5 fixture I bought at my LFS in total for 40 bucks... my tank is heavily planted and all my plants grow amazingly so id assume something similar would be totally fine for you (I fertilize once a week and run DIY CO2).

I attached a pic so you can get an idea of what kind of light that will provide... hope this helped.

But a 30" T5 will put out way more light then an 18" one wont it? I have a pair of T5 NO's on my 55, and they work great, I just didn't think a shorter light would work as well without doubling up.

well yes, but my hood only has an opening for a light thats about 4x10 so not even half of my light is hitting the water. I think an 18 would give about the same effect Im getting. Only reason I went for the 30'' was because I had it left over from my 20 long that I upgraded from (I spent 40 bucks on the hood and bulb so no way was I gonna buy another and let this one collect dust).

Sometimes horticulture fixtures are better options when it comes to multiple bulb HO.

In 2 or 4 bulb options. Only suggested retail, you have to purchase somewhere else. I use a 24" 4 bulb fixture over non aquarium plants and I like the fixture. They only run on one ballast though (one switch) and even with that depth you'd have a lot of light given 4 bulbs...might want to raise the fixture then or just go with 2.

Hmmm, the only issue is I have nowhere to hang a light like that.

I may just have to build something.

Do a search for EMT hanging brackets. They are a good way to hang lights in my opinion. I have 3 sunblaster nanotechs over my 29g hanging from some EMT.
