I have two different things growing on my driftwood. I'm assuming two different kinds of algae. I checked water params last night: Ammonia-0, Nitrates-5ish, Nitrites-0. Everything appears healthy and thriving. Just don't like having this stuff around.

Black Spot Algae?

The second stuff is some sort of thing hairy stuff growing off the wood. Beard Algae?

ID confirmation and some advice on getting rid of it is greatly appreciated.

Don't know about black spot algae, but I had an issue with BBA (black beard algae) a while back in one of my plecos breeding tanks. I now add flourish excel to the water at every water change and it seems to have done the trick. Good luck.

Nice looking rummy-noses in the background. That doesn't look like too bad an issue to me, but what do you use for lighting, how long is the lighting on and what's your carbon source?

The rummies are very healthy and have been a good addition to the tank. I'm not providing a carbon source right now. I do have some excel that is a couple years old in the cabinet. Does that stuff spoil?

I'd use the excel... I dunno if it "spoils" so to speak. For thick, nasty stuff you can try hitting it with hydrogen peroxide. I treated a tank that way once and it seemed to help eliminate a few stubborn patches.

That would be my guess too. Lighting/carbon imbalance. I'd probably toss the excel and get a new bottle of it, or API's liquid CO2 or mail-order some metricide 14.

In answer to above question about lighting, I have approximately 2 wpg, running on a timer for 5 hours a day.

Fluorescent lighting? Are the lamps old? 5hrs/day definitely isn't excessive. Bit on the light side IMO.
