After careful deliberation and an awesome finds on Craig's List I have put together my vision of a South American Community tank. If I had a larger home and not a 530sqft apartment I would have purchase a monster tank and included all of my favorites like silver dollar species and hatchets but alas I will make do.
I purchased these two tanks (40g long and 55g) for $110. But my 29 gallon stand was not going to support the 600lbs 40g long so I had to build a tank stand (my first ever)

Great work! Sweet tank setup and a stand that could hold up a house.

Thanks Freshy. This is the first tank stand I ever built and I wanted to ensure its longevity. This whole project went by super quick. I started 4:30pm Sunday and finished everything (except the planting of additional flora) by 1:00am Monday morning.

The other Current Satellite + 18w LED comes in the mail tomorrow. I am very excited because instead of using one light fixture spread across 4 feet of tank I am using 2 24 inch fixtures so there will be no nowhere in the stretch of length that is not covered by diodes. As FIshfanman posted earlier this morning, LED fixtures are outfitted with a beam spread (usually 45 degrees), this ensures that the sides of the tank are well lite despite there not being diodes directly above. The light that is emitted from the spreading of the beam has diminished amount of PAR output compared to the center diodes. By placing two 24 inch fixtures on a 48 inch long tank I can be sure that the beam spread at its lowest PAR output will be shinning outside of the tank (via light leak on the sides) and therefore the concentration of PAR output will be directed on the substrate.
This is the tank with just one 24inch fixture on it. Notice the 45 degree beam spread:

huapala, it wasn't more cost effective to get one 48-60" fixture from Current?

thank you freshy. good point, but the 48-60" is almost twice as much and i all ready had one odf CS+ fixtures. I might upgrade to a different fixture later and then upgrade my 10gallon tanks with the 24inch fixtures. I think i like the idea of running two fixtures 24" on a 48" long tank for two reasons: 1) there is no PAR prevention from the middle brace obstructing light 2) each half is independently lit so photo periods can be staggered to mimic sun light. but who knows i am always thinking of ways to improve the tanks in my home so given i am a beginner i change my ideas very frequently.

haha jk man, looks great! the stand looks nice and tall, i hate it when stands are short, gotta be as close to eye level as possible, imo. looks good man!

im going to be getting a 40 gallon breeder for Christmas, pretty excited about it!

Its funny you ask that because in fact this rocks were collected from within the square mile radius of my apartment complex :) The very large rock on the right side I have been holding onto for the past 4 months in hopes that a decent tank deal on CL would present itself, and it did.

Mahlo ia oe no kau olelo maikai. I agree. it is the first stand I ever built and i was a little worried about height but it turned out to be perfect, right at eye level for me i love it.

sweet! i like the 4ft footprint of the 40g long this is the largest glass tank i have ever owned
