I got a fluval chi 6 gallon for christmas, and it is going to be a shrimp tank. Do I need to cycle the tank? Also, is there a heater included in the kit? I cant find it so I thought it might be hidden in the filter. one last question, it is open top, so could I have an oto? I will probably cut some acrylic to cover most of the tank eventually to limit evaporation.

Do you have some healthy, established bio media, gravel or hardscape to use in this tank? That's been an instant cycle for me any time I've gone that route.
Yes, a shrimp tank must be cycled. It can take several weeks. You can do some google searches on how to cycle a fish tank and you'll find a couple of different ways to do it. Don't get in a hurry. Get a test kit and take it slow. You'll be glad you did.
