I changed the substrate in two of my tanks and have been having deaths from water quality problems ever since, despite frequent water changes. Everything was cycled except for the new substrate.

Since I'm having water quality problems, should I stop adding fertilizers until things go back to normal?

"deaths from water quality", --What kind of water Q??

Ferts should not effect the water Q, one way or another. Except maybe nitrates.

Any time you do big changes to the tank= do big water changes and do them frequently.
Ferts independent of other factors, do not cause issues or deaths, even gross errors.
You might not need much, but excess is not going to kill anything even if you dose 10X the regular amount.
New sediment, other changes etc= more likely to be the issue.

Thanks guys. It turns out it's most likely a virus, not water quality. But good to know if I am having water quality issues in the future.
