These wishing trees are actually called money trees, as well.



That’s because there are thousands of coins literally hammered into the bark.



Passers by will, when they see a money tree, take out their spare change and wedge it into the tree.



Over time, it creates quite the stunning effect.



The old trees are now literally overflowing with both money and the silent wishes and dreams of strangers.



Most of the trees are located near Cumbria and Portmeirion, all within the UK.



According to the BBC, in the 1700s, the Scottish people would sometimes hammer florins into a tree as an offering, hoping to take away sickness.



It’s unclear if that ever worked, but the tradition certainly remained.
