I recently purchased a steel stand for my 55 gal of craigslist. Very sturdy stand. However, upon getting it home I realized it was sized for a 75 gal (48" x 18"). 6" too wide front to back. Can I put a piece of thick plywood on top and still use it for my 55 gal? should I add foam under as well? my 55 gal has a plastic frame.

You should use it as an opportunity to upgrade to a 75g tank :)

Using thick plywood should work, but I'd personally prefer the tank and stand to match.

I'm not personally a fan of using foam, other people may have differing opinions (I'm not going to say I'm right and they are wrong though)

Something soft to handle any slight bumps in a 'flat' surface might be useful, but I personally think that between the frame of the tank and the silicone holding it there you should be fine. The glass isn't going to be touching the wood anyways. Just be sure your wood is flat and smooth.

I also don't see the point in setting the tank on a piece of foam. You don't want the tank to mash down into it. Anything pressing up against the bottom glass can/will cause a catastrophe.

A nice piece of 3/4" plywood that fully covers the top of that stand would support a 55g nicely I'd think. Other than that, 75g tanks are great. They're typically $135-150 new at LFSs.

If it helps, a 90g has the same footprint. :)

and if it helps more, and you're close to central PA

That Pet Place is having their anniversary sale at the end of the month, standard 'Black' Tanks are all 50% off.

so, a 75g aquarium would be $69.95, a 90g would be $119.50 (Don't quote me on that)

so.. $/gallon sale be damned. :)
