Assuming it was made with pine, I'd make a new stand out of 2x4s.

My clumsy self would be more likely to stand up from underneath an overhang and tip it over.

it would but ..I'd be concerned about tipping.

I've seen lots of stand commercially made that have the main body of the stand smaller than the footprint of the tank. they use a board with the footprint of the tank to center over the body of the stand.

the ones I've seen were for much large tanks but I felt they were more prone to tipping.

Agreed with the general consensus. Weight is not the issue at all. Stability is. If you have dogs or kids take some extra steps. Build a new one or use L brackets to anchor it to studs in the wall.

If weight will not be an issue, I'll be OK. The 20 long is only 5" extended on either end of the stand. I will put a piece of oak that is at least 21" x 18" under the tank on top of the stand, replacing the piece that is there now and measures 12" long by 18" wide. Thanx for your thoughts.

When I was building a stand for a 135g (+tons of rock and sand) I looked into engineering stress tests. 1 2x4 (barring flaws) can hold something like 10,000 lbs (assuming perfect weight distribution). If you could balance it, a single piece of 1x1 would hold your 20g.

No danger of collapse, my only concern is stability 20g tank is pretty light but if there is no danger of small kids, dogs, or anyone else bumping it then its quite doable.

Nope, no small kids, only 1 skitzo small dog, and I am very careful around the tanks. The tanks are in a room that only I am usually in.
