I ordered some Alder cones to lower my water Ph and try to breed micro rasboras and hopefully aid in breeding my GBRs.
My understanding is these little cones will release tannins readily simply by dropping them into the water for a while, unlike peat which has to be boiled before it has much effect? If so, my plan starting out is to just drop a few into the filter box and see what happens. I may also put a few into a water change bucket overnight and see how much effect they have.
Can I drop a few cones in the substrate and let them gradually decompose? I wonder how long they release tannins and if they provide a food source for fry, or if they just foul the water after a while.
