So I started off with 3 tiger barbs.....then added 3 albino tigers to even out the aggressiveness of the first 3. The school immediately settled down and the nipping of other tank creatures went down drastically. Recently though I've noticed that two of the regular tiger barbs are sparing (body slam kind of sparing and the one will chase the other off), is this indication of the tigers setting up rank in the school or is this just typical of them playing around

It is natural, whether one can call it "play" or more serious. Shoaling fish usually interact to varying degrees depending upon the species and the individual fish. This is why one has more of them.

With Tiger Barbs, the interaction is definitely of a more serious nature in that they frequently resort to serious fin nipping. Groups of this species should be larger, around 10-12 is what most reliable sources suggest, and this in a 30 gallon aquarium just for this group; mixing in other species requires larger quarters.
