Ooootay! So I'm pretty much all set up, it's been a long long day and I haven't slept in 19 hours!!!! To fill everyone in, I recently moved and decided I would give sand a shot. I'm making this thread in response to another thread I have discussing the correct sand and a request for pictures. So, let's begin!!

Now just to clarify because I know people will scratch their heads saying "wait he was talking about sand! Yes we were I'm just making this a mini build. I plastidipped the rear of the tank black. For those who don't know plastidip is a fantastic invention. It is basically what the handles on your tools are coated in however when sprayed onto a smooth surface Ie glass, car rims, car period, it can be peeled off like a vynil sticker. "But wait Mr. Seth! What if I mess up!" Peel and repeat. Now to the sand.

Alrighty, so I have about an inch of sand across the board. I got that with one 50 pound bag of #20 silica sand. Just got it all set up so still cloudy, and still not completely planted. Will continue my gardening after a nice long sleep and shall return with pictures. Cheers!

Alright, so a little belated on finishing up but here's the finished product and all my children!! IMG_20140719_215005.jpg

And, just as a bonus, here is my 29, also switched to sand but I do have a layer of fluorite underneath. IMG_20140720_145909.jpg
Fin!

Very nice! Love the angels and is that a male pearl gourami in the 29?

Question on the sand. Assuming this is pool filter sand. Pics make it look very white. I tried white substrate once before and it looked like baby poop in a month or two even with weekly 50% WCs and vacuuming. Does the same happen with very light/white sand?

I'm not sure as I just started dabbling in sand. I did find this however.
Every 2-4 weeks, depending on your fish load and available time, a good skimming of the sand should be performed. A small vinyl hose works well, about the inner diameter of a garden hose. Just hook the hose up to a faucet pump and siphon up the surface detritus. You may siphon a lot of sand the first couple of tries, a little practice is all it takes. Just keep the end of the hose about ½" away from the sand and quickly siphon up the fish waste. No need to remove or re-arrange the rocks, just get all the visible sand areas. Try to get the entire "visible" sand floor.

Every 8-16 weeks, again, depending on fish load, a good churning of the sand bed is required. Trapped food and gasses can become toxic over time and these need to be released periodically. You’ll notice that there will be a statification of the sand bed. The bottom "trapped" layer of sand will turn a dark grey-black in time, and once the layer is churned up and the waste & gasses released, it will eventually turn back to the original sand color. You’ll even notice a bit of "rotten-egg" odor when churning the bed, this is normal and are just the gasses being released. At this time you should also move rocks and churn the sand under them. You may want to do half the tank at a time so there won’t be as much disturbance. You’ll have quite a cloud of debris, so you’ll want to let it settle and do a good skimming again. Be sure to keep all impeller-operated equipment off during the churning procedure.
This quote is from a very good read: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/sand.php

On the pool filter sand and color, it is not as white as it looks in the picture. It is just standard #20 grit silica pool filter sand. In the bag it looks closer to what you would imagine sand to look like tan. In the tank I think my bright lighting washes it out. It still looks very natural. My only thought on white substrate like if it were gravel is if maybe some balance was off, light and nutrients, and it was algae. It's amazing how terrible algae can make a tank look.

That was before I started talking with Byron and we got everything under control. This is after:

Big difference. The decor change helped as well.

Yesh that is a male pearl gourami, i was trying to get a good shot of him but he is a little skittish. He needs a girlfriend.
