A couple years ago I bred blue and red ramshorn snails and thought they were awesome, had them for years and had some definitely good sized breeders. Recently I went into my lfs and saw a couple ramshorn snails that are enormous, so naturally I bought them and threw them into my tank. Anyone have any info on these guys? There were 2 with stripes (see pic) and 1 yellow one. Are these just a different species all together? uploadfromtaptalk1409329822693.jpg

Lol thanks, I thought these guys were pretty interesting and Im thinking they have to be a different species due to the drastic size difference from any ramshorn I have seen or had before.

I'm pretty sure I have "common" ramshorns, but I do get "red" ones occasionally. Mine are out of the fish ponds, which my grandparents built and stocked back when my dad was a boy. Grandma had all sorts of snails, but what she called them is different from the names I see now - except for the ramshorns. I have no idea where Grandma originally got hers, but she used to order her fish food and supplies from Van Ness back in the day. The only snails left now are ramshorns and bladder snails (which Grandma always called "olive snails".)

The ramshorns I usually see in the remaining ponds are usually no more than 1/4 to 1/2 inch, but I occasionally get one that is around an inch. They are mostly brown, with the rare reddish one showing up occasionally. I'm pretty sure the marauding raccoons have decimated the snail population, which is why I rarely see large snails anymore. I do not know what species they are.

They don't seem to eat live plants, but will eat the dead and decaying plant matter, some algae, food the fish don't eat, and dead fish.

Columbian Ramshorns are not a ramshorn snail, despite the name, they are a kind of apple snail. IME, they will eat plants.
