older biocube 29 to become a planted tank

are bioballs good or bad for planted tank? i was thinking of removing them and putting in sponges. (any ideas on best sponges?)

also, is there a sponge that "polishes" water? there is some cloudiness to the water, my old canister filter (years ago) had a polishing filter.

thanks

I would keep the bioballs in. In a planted tank there is a lot of debris and the sponges will clog quickly. I wouldn't worry about nitrate production as the plants will absorb it. You can use a Poly Filter to help polish off the water and maintain clarity.

i found some fluval polishing pads that i laid on top the bioballs. i think i paid that highest price ever for some quilt batting : )

in anycase water cleared up some.

the balls are LOUD though.

considering this mod, and instead of the bag of chem stuff, i'll just leave some balls packed in there for the surface area.

They work great freshwater too. much better then the stock filter setup, and cheaper in the long run.

looks like about 100 bucks
so not sure how its cheaper in long run, bioballs don't need replaced.
