Is it possible for platies and swordtails to interbreed? I'm wondering if I should keep them in separate tanks. Also, what about gambusia and guppies?

Platies and Swordtails are both in the genus Xiphophorus, so the potential for cross breeding is there.
Guppies, genus Poecilia and genus Gambusia species do not have any chance though.

Should I be concerned about my swords and platies or is it not a big deal? I just have a community tank for my enjoyment. Any babies I plan to give away to other hobbyists.
Not a problem if you have a plan to deal with the potential exponential increase in platy/swordtail population.

If you are giving the offspring away if there should be any crosses that show up they probably would be sterile. So if you don't want to separate them giving that information out about the possibility would be kind.
