I originally had 3 African Cichlids in my 20 gallon tall tank, When one morning I woke up to 2 of them dead, and one of them was trying to jump out of the tank, and kept swimming upside down. Does anyone know why this might have happened?

Toxins in the water maybe? Obviously something in the water was making that last fish uncomfortable.

There are numerous "African cichlids"....pics and/or clarifying what you have as a second step to giving us water parameters from a good liquid test kit...

+1 you need to test the water for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate
if this is a new set up and you didn't use media from an established aquarium . my first thought would be towards possible toxins .

Is this a new tank? Have you been doing regular water changes? Also, a 20 gallon is too small of a tank.

I recognize him from another forum I'm on... asked the same question. Welcome to AC, Wessel. Only African cichlids that are suitable in a 20g are the shell dwellers from Lake Tanganyika......
