This is my second Melanotaenia praecox that has the same disease. A bump develops under the skin and after about several weeks breaks the skin it bursts out. After another week or so the fish stops eating and eventually dies. I tried fungal and bacterial remedies but to no avail. Apparently whatever it is, is contagious and seems to affect only this species. I am very serious about the water quality; haven't lost a fish for the last five years.

The tank is freshwater, established about ten years ago, no live plants. External power filter, air stone, heater. 20% water change per week. Ph 6.7ish, no ammonia, no nitrite, usual nitrate (5-10).

I am not an expert by an means, but I do wonder if you have fed them live food? Or, if they were fed live food before they became your fish?
