my tank is now clearing ammonia within 24hrs- I added more last night while ammonia was still around .5-1ppm and it's now 0. nitrites, however, are 5+ppm. I feel like I should add more ammonia but worry about a buildup of nitrite... should I add more or wait until the nitrite has gone down??

yes, if the tank has finished cycling. I said close to finished. I've never had a tank completely process ammonia but have so much excess nitrite, that's what I'm asking about.

The nitrite is not going anywhere but into the bacterias stomach (not literally as they don't have a stomach), just wait until it is gone - the ammonia bacteria will be fine without food for a bit.

At this stage I would keep adding ammonia to at least 2ppm daily. This will keep the cycle process going. Remember, once you stock the tank the inhabitants will continuously add ammonia to the water. The bacteria which consume nitrite will grow to meet the demand, provided there is adequate surface area and contact with water.
